Skyrim is the fifth instalment in the Bethesda series the Elder Scrolls not to confused with Scrolls they aptly used the Roman numeral V to show this at least it fit the theme of the game unlike most game series looking at you GTA the theme of which is medieval fantasy. This is the opposite of their other series Fallout which is set in post apocalyptic future and uses numbers to name it's game pretty futuristic am I right enough of paying out the title lets talk about the game. Now where the hell do I start Skyrim boast choice more choice then you could ever want there is choice everywhere in this game to much of it even this has always been the best and worst feature of the this series depending on how you look at it. Even with all this choice only at the start of the game do you really feel like you had a choice though and that choice is what race you want to be a strong Nord or scaly Argonian this choice effect your base skills and your passive ability and race power rest of the game you can do what ever you want as these base effects mean very little as everything in this game levels up at the same rate. The rest of the no matter what you do it feels like you have done nothing for instants in my game I became the archmage of the mages' guild and one of the people I entered the guild with walks up to me and says "your new here too aren't you we should work together". This really annoys me so much as when I become the boss I want people to come up to me and go "hey man I LOVE YOU" as I work hard to be bad ass.
I am a huge dick when it comes to exploiting games as it is just like cheating except it is not by manipulating the source code (incidental a great movie) I decided to be a wood elf archer mage that is right no melee and with sneak being bugged to the point you can shoot an arrow 2 feet away from the enemy and they will say "did you hear something?". When they do eventually find me I just burn them away with hellfire with the skill when you dual cast a spell it knocks them back there is also a skill in archery that does the same thing so I have two knock back abilities depending on how far away my target is this allows me to run away and create some distance to heal and regain mana. Now to compare and contrast some of Bethesda's other products to Skyrim and how the improved or devolved the franchise the most notable change between Skyrim and Oblivion is the writing and the voice acting has drastically improved making it a more engaging experience. Only change I dislike is the fact that when ever I walk near a npc that no longer has even one answer dialogue box will spout their lifestory to me when ever I go near them for instance a sea captain constantly says "they call me captain because I used to be the captain for the east trading company so now they call me the captain anyway even though I retired."
There are some bugs in the game that may get fixed on patch coming out on the 31/11/2011 in Australia 30/11/2011 in america these bugs include when you try to fast travel Skyrim crashes and you return to desktop without so much of a warning. Lastly is when you try to sell item it sometime exit's the sell window for no reason this also happen sometime when you read a book you cannot select another item by the use of a mouse you have to instead exit then re-enter these are the two most annoying bugs there are some others but they are more funny than annoying like dead companions falling from the sky at your wedding. Speaking of weddings there are many optional side-missions in each town from getting married to hunting down a serial killer which is just a most interesting find do not tell the media they will flip out :P.
Now for what people care about the most the gameplay This game can be played in wither 3rd person or 1st person depending on your preference and can easily be switched between the two the combat system is a lot more diverse than it's predecessor with the use of dual wielding one handed weapons and spell it would be nice though if you could combine spells together for new spells like a fire ice ball but i can understand why this has not happened as they are polar opposites. Depending on what you are using the skill will be leveled up allowing the player to train strongly in one skill set or even evenly train all his skills both work just as well from what I have been told from my friends they tend to drift towards dual one hand weapons and spells. They also mostly removed the seven statistics to stamina, health and magicka each of these are just as important as each other for how ever you want to play except magicka as if you want to not use spells you can just not improve this. Stamina improves the amount to capacity you have and the amount you can run or use power attacks, Health is self explanatory increases your maximum health and regeneration outside of battle, Magicka like health increase maximum amount and regeneration both in and outside of battle. Also when you level up you gain a skill point that can be used in your skill trees except they need to have the correct skill level in that tree and the proceeding point before it these points upgrade yourself in the use of that skill and give bonus passive abilities. Lastly their is the headlining feature of this game the fact that you are dragon born which means you can speak the dragon language which results in giving you the ability to shout to either improve yourself or effect your surroundings. To gain these abilities you have to first gain dragon souls by killing dragons and stealing their souls then you have to learn the dragon word on walls all through Skyrim then you use the dragon souls you have collected to unlock the dragon shout or improve it then SHOUT at the world as you are DRAGONBORN.
That about covers the gameplay there is also smithing and
enchanting of items to improve stats but they are a little complicated to
explain in a review already way over limit they are also great for speed
levelling if you have the money to spend on iron bars and leather straps. Now
to talk about something else how does that sound, sound you say ok I will talk
about that Skyrim has a great original score with the coding to back it up so
that it plays the correct music in the correct spots. For example when you’re
about to fight a group of enemies or a dragon it picks up to enhance the mood
to fit what you’re feeling or when your sneaking around there is only the sound
of your footsteps ringing in your ears and the creaking of the wood under the
heel of your iron boots. The score also nicely melds to just exploring the land
to a seeing an idol or a new town. Which brings me to the engine the new
graphic’s engine of Skyrim has fantastic lighting and smoke effects in only
downfall is like most MMORPG’s they have to reuse the same textures a lot to
flesh out the entire world which makes it look disjointed in some places even
though everything has been placed by hand and none have been randomly generated
like in previous Elder Scroll games. There are plenty of mods out their which
are fan made textures to make places look less disjointed and more natural
these are only done with replacing files at the moment once the mod tools come
out expect a lot more retexturing and even new area’s to explore which is one
of the best things about Bethesda’s games they have a great mod community.
There are many reasons to enjoy this game but it is an
extremely involving RPG so it will suck a minimum of 40 hours of your life be
prepared for this when you get it, also there is no multiplayer as much as it
would be nice to have a co-op partner in some dungeons or quests except that
multiplayer can easily ruin the experience of this game as you are very much
the strongest person in this world and having two of you would imbalance the game.
If you are looking for a fantasy game with great co-op I would suggest Lord of
the Rings: War in the North the gameplay in that game is much like Balders gate
games like Dark alliance. Also spoiler and forewarning there are some very controversial
things in Skyrim that I am ashamed to have in it one being a serial killer’s
house with severed heads on bodies lying around the other is once you beat the
Dark Brotherhood missions you can train your skills on living torture victims
chained up in the dungeons torture in games is the one thing I cannot stand I
hate any games that force this on a player as they do effect people and you
should not be forced to participate. I did not like this being in amnesia and I
hate it being in Skyrim but at least you’re not forced to do this. Until next
time I hope you do not get killed by the Dark Brotherhood, also I forgot to
mention people hold grudges in this game and will send people after you to kill
you this is a nice feature PEACE. Got skyward Sword played a little bit of it already miss the sweet sweet Skyrim graphics HD to SD never a nice change sword play is great far to much talking at start like usual in Zelda games but looking forward to it expect a lot of Skyrim screenshots to come very soon I have heaps of them will make a post full or them.
